A Hearty dish does two things at once: it refills your whole health bar and adds temporary yellow hearts on top. The yellow hearts are the effect level divided by four, rounded to the nearest whole heart, which is why potency adds up in steps rather than smoothly. Hearty meals have no duration - the extra hearts stay until you lose them.
